Michel Platini denied registration – Kommersant

Officials

The Executive Committee of the International Football Federation (FIFA) did not to carry the presidential election organization, scheduled for February 26 next year. At the same time the executive committee said that Michel Platini, one of the presidential candidates will not be allowed to participate in elections as long as he will not be removed disqualification. Thus, Mr. Platini, recently was considered the most likely successor to Sepp Blatter as president of FIFA, even risking to be left out of the election campaign.

Yesterday, the executive committee of FIFA has considered a number of issues – chief among them concerned the timing of the Extraordinary Congress of FIFA, which is to be elected the new president of the federation, instead of retiring in the wake of the largest in the history of world football corruption scandal Sepp Blatter. As a result, the Board decided that the elections should be held, as scheduled, February 26, 2016. The Board also approved a plan to reorganize FIFA, represented by the head of the Committee on Reforms Francois Carrara. He, in particular, provides for limiting the duration of his tenure as president of FIFA 12 years, setting the age limit for the president and members of the executive committee (74 years), the publication of information about income managers FIFA, the transfer of more powers from the executive committee of the congress of FIFA and so on. D. Suggestions come in effect, if they receive the majority of votes at the February Congress.

The news that the elections will be held within a period not very good news for the president of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Michel Platini, who until recently was considered the most likely successor to Sepp Blatter. Recall that on October 8 gentlemen Blatter and Platini were suspended by the ethics committee of FIFA of any football activities due to the fact that both are suspected of being involved in corrupt activities. In particular, Michel Platini, the Swiss authorities have any question about 2 million Swiss francs ($ 2.05 million), which he received in 2011 from the FIFA supposedly for work performed in the period from 1999 to 2002, when he was an adviser to the president FIFA. No contract to justify getting the money, do not exist. According to Michel Platini, between him and Sepp Blatter had reached a gentleman’s agreement to this effect. UEFA president insists that the Swiss laws equate oral agreement to writing. But the position of Mr Platini anyway shaky. Otherwise, FIFA, in the first place, would not disqualify him, and secondly, yesterday gave the green light to its registration as a presidential candidate.

But it did not happen. And judging by the head of the electoral commission FIFA Domenico Rocks may not happen at all. Mr. Rock said that Michel Platini had applied for registration as a candidate (the deadline for nominations – 26 October) before the disqualification. However, at the moment it can not be registered. Domenico Scala said that admission to the election of Michel Platini is not possible until the removal from disqualification. And she, as previously explained, the ethics committee FIFA, can not be limited to 90 days. The term, if necessary, may be extended for another 45 days. Thus, in the most unfavorable for Michel Platini developments in the rights it will be restored in just a few days before the election. But it will not mean the automatic inclusion of his name among the candidates. Domenico Scala said that it will take a separate decision of the electoral commission. A guarantee that it will be in favor of Michel Platini seems to be no. Furthermore, Mr. Rock made it clear that for admission to the election of Mr Platini will be insufficient cancel disqualification. Election Commission insists that, in respect of candidates should be carried out no checks disciplinary and especially state authorities.

Michel Platini has already appealed the decision on his disqualification in the appeal committee of FIFA. In case of failure at this stage he will probably appeal to the international sports arbitration. In consideration of cases in selected instances takes time, which may not be enough, let FIFA and UEFA, and called for rapid clarification of the status of most of Michel Platini.

In this situation, supporters of Michel Platini have to look for a new candidate on which to bet. At the moment, the favorites in the race for European support said former Swiss footballer Ramon Vega and the head of the Asian Football Confederation, a member of the Qatari royal family, Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah. Both confirmed that they had received proposals for participation in the elections with the support of the European Federation. Previously, as a possible replacement Michel Platini also called the president of the Football Federation of the Netherlands Michael van Prague.
