Clear. Dry. Air + 15C, the track +26 … 24 C
Usually, to prepare for qualifying and the race teams have four hours for three workouts, but in Sochi fully work was only a little more than thirty minutes. On Friday morning the track had to be cleared of spilled eve of diesel fuel, the day was pouring rain, and the drivers barely traveled, and Saturday training lasted 35 minutes – to the serious accident of Carlos Sainz.
Before the 13th rotation of the machine Sainz braking jerked to the left, she caught a wall at high speed flew off the track, crashing into the protective barriers. The driver was conscious, he was sent to the medical center and then to the hospital. Coaching decided not to continue – it was necessary to restore the seriously damaged the protective barriers TecPro in the 13th turn – suffered even find them a fence. For the same reason moved to Sunday the first race GP3, which was to be held before the start of qualifying. By the beginning of qualifying repairs have been completed.
Given the extremely limited time to prepare the cars, teams had to find the settings in the course of training. In Pirelli brought to Sochi softer compounds than last year, but to get them to work effectively was not all that affected the balance of power.
In the first session, pilots Manor, Sauber , McLaren and Ferrari once went to SuperSoft, remaining confined Soft in the first attempt. Maldonado embarked on a second sector without consequences for the car.
Like last year, lots of drivers to work a few laps to bring the tires in the working mode. In the second attempt everything except the racers Mercedes, moved to SuperSoft – softer tires warmed up a little faster and provide a slight advantage.
Minutes headed Nico Rosberg – 1: 38,343, two-tenths ahead of team-mate. Fernando Alonso, Marcus Ericsson and racers Manor dropped out of the competition. Sainz did not take part in qualifying.
In the second session, all used SuperSoft. First Rosberg set the fastest time, but almost the same as in the Soft – 1: 38,335, Hamilton spent an extra lap to warm up the tires and was faster – 1: 37,672, but on the next lap Nico was able to add – 1: 37.500.
In the second attempt the leaders failed to improve. Kvyat, Nasr, Button, Massa and Maldonado did not get into the finals. Daniel on lap prevented traffic – and the tires were not ready.
The final scenario repeated – in the majority of bus drivers went into operation on the second or even the third round. In the first series of circles on the track Riccardo did not leave. At first, Raikkonen led the protocol, then Vettel and Bottas passed quickly, and Rosberg fastest time – 1: 37,113, beating Hamilton by three tenths. In the second attempt Rosberg was not able to add, and Hamilton made a mistake and pulled into the pits, interrupting the fastest lap.
Nico Rosberg won the qualification in Sochi won the second pole in a row, the 18th of his career and third this season. The second line in Hamilton – Mercedes drivers again occupy the entire first row of the grid. Bottas will start from the second and Vettel, with the third – Raikkonen and Hulkenberg. Kvyat will start the race 11th.
