This drug was introduced in the WADA list of prohibited substances from 1 January 2016. At the same time anti-doping agency of Russia, Belarus and Latvia opposed the ban meldonium.

On the Russian President Vladimir Putin said doping scandal last week. He said that if meldonium included in the list of prohibited drugs, then it had to be borne in mind and respond accordingly. The Head of State instructed to cooperate more actively with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the IOC in order to avoid doping scandals in the future.

Putin called the unacceptable repetition of doping scandals. The president stressed that the majority of athletes from Russia are not related to doping, do not cast doubt on their achievement, their career should not suffer from it.
