Sebastian Coe: “Removal of Russia – the best way to protect the” clean “athletes” – SPORT – EXPRESS

IAAF President Sebastian Coe in his column in the British newspaper The Telegraph admitted that he was given difficult decision to suspend the membership VFLA. As a result of the burst doping scandal all Russian athletes were barred from participating in international competitions.

“On Friday evening, at the end of nearly three-hour meeting of my colleagues almost unanimously voted for the removal of Russia. The atmosphere that prevailed in the Hall was a mixture of sadness and anger. We realized that if you do not realize the importance of the task before us, from athletics will be no future.

Let us not deceive ourselves, this is not an isolated the case in a single country. Last week, among other things, I was criticized for offering to solve the problem through dialogue, and not isolation. I have always supported this approach. Still, never say never. The shocking findings of the report of the independent commission have left my colleagues choice. This is – the toughest sanctions that we could use.

Now we have to concentrate on the necessary changes. They can be achieved only if we manage to establish solid criteria by which we evaluate efforts. And, of course, all this should be resolved through dialogue. This path may be shorter than many think. But not enough to restore confidence and my term as head of the organization.

This is our chance to clear the track and field athletes to show the data they could over talents. That is another reason why the decision against Russia was so difficult. But I believe that the best way to protect the honest athletes – is to show our toughness, but not be limited to mere words “
